Job Description

The Dennis P. McHugh Piermont Public Library seeks a collaborative and community-focused leader who will serve as the head of the Library, supervising a staff of six employees and carrying out the Library’s mission and policies determined by the Board of Trustees. This position is a full-time (35 hours/week minimum) on-site position.

Situated in the center of Piermont, NY with spectacular views of the Hudson River, the Dennis P. McHugh Piermont Public Library serves as the cultural hub of this rivertown village. With a population of 2,500, Piermont is a popular destination for visitors and cyclists, who come to frequent the numerous restaurants, shops, and art galleries, and stroll along the pier to enjoy the magnificent river views. Reflecting the village’s artistic character and natural beauty, the Library’s mission is to be a beacon within the community, strengthening ties with residents, visitors, and local businesses alike. The Library provides a range of educational, recreational, and cultural materials, services, programs, and events, including art classes, local artists’ exhibits, performances, and concerts.

Responsibilities:

  • Acts as the face of the Library and promotes the Library as a warm and welcoming place
  • Strengthens the Library’s impact by serving patrons’ needs and interests through a process of seeking their input/feedback and informing them of all the Library’s resources both digital and in-person
  • Develops the Library’s mission to be the cultural hub and connector within our community
  • Oversees the staff, facility, finances, planning, policies, programming, day-to-day operations, and public relations, as detailed below:
  • Performs professional and technical library routines including collection development and the selection of adult books and other media materials
  • Guides the development of programs and services, and makes recommendations for Board approval
  • Oversees a staff of six employees, which includes recruiting, training, and evaluating staff, conducting staff meetings, and providing ongoing clear communication, guidance, and feedback
  • Attends Board meetings, prepares and presents statistical and narrative reports to the Board, administers policies established by the Board, and maintains clear communication with the Board
  • Prepares the preliminary budget for Board approval and administers the expenditure of library funds
  • Prepares grant proposals and pursues fundraising efforts
  • Oversees the maintenance of the Library’s property, including building and grounds
  • Works with staff and other librarians to evaluate the effectiveness of the Library's services in relation to the changing needs of the community
  • Engages in professional development through meetings, workshops, professional materials, and continuing education courses
  • Required Qualifications:
  • This is a Civil Service position. Applicant must meet the training and experience criteria for Library Director I job specifications, as stated below:
  • Master of Library Science (MLS), Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS), or other graduate library degree from a library school located within New York State which is registered by the State Education Department, or from a library school program which is accredited by the American Library Association.
  • Three (3) years of professional library experience, two (2) years of which must have been in a public library in an administrative or supervisory capacity. Experience must have been attained after either receipt of the certification or receipt of a master’s degree from a library school recognized by the New York State Department of Education.
  • Possession of a valid New York State Librarian’s Professional Certificate.
  • Local area resident preferred.

  • Ability to communicate effectively across diverse populations in different modalities and settings.
  • Digital fluency in utilizing the technology that supports the Library’s needs and future growth.
  • Salary and Benefits:
  • This is a full-time (35 hours/week minimum), on-site position.
  • Salary range $70,000 to $85,000, commensurate with experience.
  • Benefits include vacation, holiday, personal, sick time, as well as health insurance and retirement plan.
