Greenhouse Manager Grower

About us: Garden Time Inc. Garden Center is located in Upstate New York near the Adirondacks. The company is family owned and has been in operation since 1971. We are proud to serve our area with the highest quality plants and shrubs. We specialize in annuals in pots and packs and hanging baskets, and a wide variety of perennials.

Job Summary:

The greenhouse manager is responsible for producing a quality crop that is ready for retail and special orders when expected. Plants require care 7 days a week and some tasks can only be done after hours. Growing is a unique, skilled trade that develops from hands-on experience combined with educational opportunities. The manager coordinates directly with the production crew to efficiently complete the necessary tasks. The grower participates in scheduling, variety selection, planting, growing, organizing and more “behind the scenes” planning work.

Responsibilities:

Supervising and training the growing team

Growing plants from plugs, seeds and cuttings.

Watering and fertilizing the crop by hand-watering with a hose or with drip irrigation

Disease/pest scouting, prevention.

Mixing of fertilizer in bulk tanks

Decisions about crop care including pinching, spacing and moving

Crop organization and layout

Participate in the production planning including variety selection, crop plans, space planning, material purchasing and inventory.

Schedule/work hours:

Anticipate 30 or more hours per week in January.

Anticipate 48 or more hours per week from February to June. Weekend days will be asked during the busy spring months.

Anticipate 40 or more hours per week from July to December.

General weekday schedule is 9-6/

Vacation time is available during non-peak seasons and in coordination with growing team

Skills needed to be successful:

Desire to be responsible for growing a quality crop

Desire for continuous improvement

Ability to look at the crop and identify what needs to be done

Ability to manage and train others

Ability to organize and prioritize the work that needs to be done

Physical ability to be on feet 8-10 hours per day/7 days per week, frequent bending and lifting. Should have tolerance to cold and hot temperatures. Dusty conditions can arise.

Ability to speak Spanish is a plus

Experience Required:

Minimum 2 years of growing similar crops, preferable

Ability to manage your growing team daily

Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft word and excel. Must be familiar with receiving and sending emails

Strong organizational skills and customer service

Compensation:

Compensation is based upon experience and knowledge of work, starting pay 20-28/hr.

Health Insurance is available after probationary period and is partially paid by employer

Dental and eye insurance is available

Paid time off and holidays after probationary period

401k with employer contribution is available after probationary period
