General Job Summary:
This position operates a variety of heavy equipment and performs general maintenance tasks in the maintenance of roadways, stormwater, right-of-way, parks, grounds, recreation facilities and buildings, under the direction of the Road Foreman and Deputy Director of Public Works Operations.
Duties and Responsibilities : Estimated % of Time
- Equipment Operation: Operate a variety of equipment, machines and tools in the repair and maintenance of streets and storm sewers, water utility systems and sanitary sewer utility systems such as lawn mowers, snow blowers, ATV/UTV, tractors, one-ton truck with plow attachment, loader, dump truck, chipper, sweeper, back-hoe, pumps, generators, and various snow plow equipment. | 10%
- Roadway and Infrastructure Repair Maintenance : Perform roadway maintenance including crack routing and sealing, pavement patching, and shouldering. Perform patchwork on paved trails. Perform curb and gutter and sidewalk replacement or repair. | 20%
- Grounds and Landscaping Maintenance: Maintain roadway rights-of-way, parks, and other Town properties through landscaping, mowing, brush, and tree clearing. Lawn and roadside mowing, median mowing, landscape maintenance, and clearing brush and trees. | 20%
- Stormwater Maintenance: Perform storm sewer maintenance work including removal and replacement of inlets/catch basins, and miscellaneous related structures. Perform routine stormwater pond maintenance, including inlet/outlet cleaning, repairs, and structure inspections. Clearing and grubbing of ponds, drainage, and stormwater easements. Regular cleaning of catch basin sumps. Perform ditching and roadside drainage restoration maintenance. | 20%
- Snow and Ice Control: Efficiently plow and salt streets and/or parking areas and clear snow from pedestrian ways. | 20%
- General Maintenance and Support: Perform minor equipment maintenance, cleaning and repairs; building maintenance and cleaning; and maintenance and minor repair tasks to Town buildings. | 5%
- Miscellaneous Responsibilities : Erect street posts and signs; assist with sewer and water construction and maintenance; perform traffic control in work areas; pavement marking; pick up refuse from roads and right-of-way; assist with setting and checking elevations for projects; assist with election equipment set-up; and set line and grade and perform masonry work. | 5%
- Perform additional duties as assigned and attend the Town required training. Regular attendance is required. Work in a manner that is aware of personal safety and the safety of others and observes safety, health and sanitation codes, regulations, or practices required by the Town or governmental authority.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Education, Experience, Licenses:
- High school diploma or equivalent. Two (2) years of experience in street maintenance and construction, facilities and grounds maintenance. Possess and maintain a valid CDL, class B/C/D, with the ability to obtain an N endorsement within 6 months of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge:
- Comprehensive knowledge of the safe and efficient operation of various heavy and light municipal equipment (e.g., backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, graders, snowplows, street sweepers, mowers) in diverse conditions. Thorough knowledge of relevant safety regulations, traffic laws, and departmental procedures for equipment operation and work site safety, including proper use of safety equipment and traffic control.
- Familiarity with materials and methods used in public works maintenance and construction (e.g., asphalt patching, concrete work, landscaping).
- Awareness of the local road systems, infrastructure, and service areas.
Skills:
- Proficiently operate assigned equipment safely and efficiently.
- Perform routine equipment maintenance and minor repairs. Set up and manage safe traffic control in work zones.
- Apply basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and perform tasks involving comparison, counting, differentiation, measurement, and sorting information.
- Utilize functional reasoning and applying sound judgment in varied work activities.
- Exercise good judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information.
- Make sound decisions under moderate supervision.
- Maintain equipment cleanliness, both generally and regarding personal belongings.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing with supervisors, teammates, and the public, including completing basic paperwork.

Equipment Used:
This position requires the operation of a wide range of equipment, including: Lawn mowers, snow blowers, ATV/UTV, tractors, one-ton truck with plow attachment, loader, dump truck, chipper, sweeper, back-hoe, pumps, generators, various snow plow equipment, welder, cutting torch, sewer cleaners, metal detectors, mechanic’s hand tools, hand excavation tools and carpenter’s tools, crack sealing equipment, hot sheet trailer/infrared, jack-hammers, vibrating skid plate tampers, string trimmers, chain saws, pruners, welder, cutting torch, computer tablets and cellphone.
Working Conditions:
Normal for this position are approximately: Early November – early March, Mon. – Thurs. 6:30 am – 3:00 pm and Fri. 6:30 am – 12:30 pm Early March – early November, Mon. – Thurs. 6:00 am – 3:00 pm and Fri. 6:00 am – 10:00 am Ability to be on 24-hour call rotation and report to Town Hall within 60 minutes after receiving call. Additional hours are required for snow plowing and special projects. The work involves moderately hazardous and uncomfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors such as extreme hot or cold, odors, toxic agents, noise, vibrations, wetness, machinery, electrical currents, traffic hazards, disease and/or dust.

- Operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring multiple complex and rapid adjustments.
- Coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing highly skilled movements such as heavy equipment use. Hear and understand instructions, warnings, and communication from others, especially in noisy environments.
- Exert moderately heavy physical effort in moderate to heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
- Lift objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds and to repeatedly lift, move and carry objects weighing more than 100 pounds with assistance. Recognize and identify similarities of differences between characteristics of colors, forms, sounds, tastes odors and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.
- Judge distances, clearances, and spatial relationships to operate equipment safely and avoid obstacles.
