Saint Michael Episcopal School (SMES)

Position: Director of Early Childhood Music

Reports to: Tom Hammond-Davies, Director of Music, SMAA

Director of Preschool and Kindergarten, SMES

Work Hours: This is a full-time position of 2,080 hours/year split equally between SMAA

(1,040 hours/year) and SMES (1,040/year) as follows:

 

School Year Hours (40 weeks)

· SMES: 26 hours per week

· SMAA: 17.75 hours per week

Total: 1750 hours (School Year)

Summer Hours (12 weeks)

· SMES: 0 hours

· SMAA: 27.5 hours per week

Total: 330 hours (Summer/Vacation)

The standard work week for this position is Monday through Friday , with Saturdays and Sundays typically observed as days off. On approximately 18 Sundays per year, the post-holder will be required to work at SMAA. In those cases, the Director of Music will adjust the weekday workload to ensure overall balance and sustainability.

The typical schedule during the School Year is as follows. Lunch breaks are typically from 12:00 p.m. – 1 p.m. when not conflicting with music class schedules.

Tuesdays 8 a.m. – 1.30 p.m. SMES

1.30 p.m. – 4.30 p.m. SMAA

Wednesdays 8 a.m. – 1.30 p.m. SMES

Thursdays 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. SMES

2 p.m. – 4.30 p.m. SMAA

Fridays 8.15 a.m. – 12.15 p.m. SMES

12.15 p.m. – 4.30 p.m. SMAA

Duties and Responsibilities:

This is a shared position (50/50) between Saint Michael Episcopal School (SMES) and Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church (SMAA).

 

Major Responsibilities for SMES:

· Teach and introduce music, both instrumental and vocal, to all SMES students.

· Plan and implement age-appropriate music activities that encourage a love of learning music, including accompanying on piano or guitar.

· Evaluate students’ interests, aptitudes, temperament, and individual characteristics to determine suitable instruments for use.

· Develop a structured music curriculum to support musical learning and movement.

· Collaborate with the school chaplain to create and implement music for chapel services.

· Collaborate with Admin team for monthly community Star Assemblies team to participate in praise and worship portion.

· Organize and direct two preschool performances per year (Christmas and End-of-Year).

· Supervise children in a safe and nurturing environment.

· Ensure compliance with standards set by Texas Health and Human Services (THHS), Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools, and other relevant governing bodies.

· Demonstrate flexibility by assisting other staff in maintaining quality programming, including occasional substitute teaching and additional duties as needed.

· Support school-wide events such as Parents’ Night, Auction, Grandparents Day, and Barnyard Bash.

Major Responsibilities for SMAA:

· Direct the Cherub Choir (ages 3 through 2nd grade), leading rehearsals on Wednesday afternoons/evenings during the program year and coordinating occasional Sunday morning performances.

· Plan repertoire and activities, oversee recruitment, and maintain engagement with Cherub Choir families.

· Lead rehearsals and the performance of the annual Christmas Pageant (Sunday afternoons, mid-October to mid-December).

· Prepare for and lead the music portion of Vacation Bible School (preparation through May, for VBS over one week, typically in June).

· Assist with all aspects of Chorister Camp, including planning, participant and volunteer recruitment, implementation, and assessment (typically the weekend of Columbus Day in October).

· Attend relevant regular meetings, including weekly music staff meetings and monthly all staff meetings.

· Work with Director of Children and Families Ministry as a liaison between SMES and SMAA, actively identifying ways to connect school and church families.

· Assist early childhood music initiatives with SMAA’s Youth Mission Week.

· Must complete Safe Church training and keep license current.

 

Summer Responsibilities (SMAA only)

 

During the months when SMES is not in session, the Director is expected to work 330 hours in total for SMAA only and will focus on the following:

 · Maintain regular informal engagement with Cherub and Chorister families to sustain relationships and encourage continued participation at SMAA.

· Continue to oversee all aspects of Chorister Camp, including planning, participant and volunteer recruitment, and assessment.

· Assist in the planning and execution of Vacation Bible School (VBS) music education.

· Develop and finalize the calendar and lesson plans for the upcoming program year, ensuring families receive a complete program calendar by August.

· Assist with planning and development of choir tours.

· Support other Music Department programs and events as needed and as availability allows.

· Work with the Director of Music in April-May to clarify the scope and expectations of summer responsibilities for each year.

Employment Requirements:

· Bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent experience.

· Early Childhood through 12 th grade music certification preferred.

· Meet personal qualifications outlined in the THHS Minimum Standards for Child Care Centers.

· Comply with the Employee Handbooks of Saint Michael Episcopal School and Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church.
