Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Traffic Engineer to join our multidisciplinary civil engineering team. In this role, you’ll lead traffic planning, analysis, and design efforts that support site development, transportation infrastructure, and municipal projects. You’ll bridge engineering principles, traffic modeling, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder coordination in support of sustainable and efficient transportation systems.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform traffic impact studies, analysis, and forecasting using tools such as Synchro/SimTraffic, VISSIM, HCS, or similar.
  • Prepare signal warrants, intersection capacity analyses, queuing studies, and level-of-service (LOS) reports.
  • Design and layout traffic control elements: signage, pavement markings, signalization plans, intersection geometrics, bike/pedestrian facilities, and curb ramps.
  • Review site-development plans (residential, commercial, mixed-use, industrial) for traffic circulation, access, and safety compliance.
  • Coordinate and manage permit submittals, agency reviews, and municipal approvals (state DOTs, local traffic departments).
  • Integrate traffic aspects with site layout, grading, utilities, drainage, and stormwater infrastructure to ensure coherent designs.
  • Apply standards and guidelines (MUTCD, AASHTO, local design manuals) in traffic design and safety evaluations.
  • Conduct field visits, traffic counts, turning-movement studies, and data collection to validate design assumptions.
  • Serve as a liaison with clients, municipal staff, traffic engineers, and other consulting teams; present analyses and project decisions to public bodies as needed.
  • Participate in quality control / peer review of traffic work products.
  • Manage schedule, budgets, and deliverables for assigned traffic components of civil projects.
  • Provide post-construction evaluation, signal timing adjustments, and construction administration support when needed.

Minimum Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • Professional Traffic Engineer (P.T.E.) certification or Professional Engineer (P.E.) license preferred (or working toward).
  • Minimum of 5+ years’ experience in traffic engineering, transportation planning, or related work.
  • Proficiency with traffic simulation and analysis software (Synchro, VISSIM, HCS, etc.).
  • Strong technical knowledge of traffic engineering principles, signal systems, capacity and queuing analysis, and geometric design.
  • Experience preparing traffic reports, studies, and design drawings in support of development and roadway improvement projects.
  • Ability to read site plans, grading, utility, and roadway plans, and integrate traffic design with civil infrastructure.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to present technical findings to non-technical audiences (e.g. planning commissions, local government).
  • Strong analytical mindset, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks under deadlines.
  • Familiarity with relevant codes, standards, and best practices (MUTCD, AASHTO, state DOT manuals).
  • Proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D (or equivalent) and Microsoft Office Suite; experience with GIS is a plus.
