Job Description

Position: Switch Technician

Location: Newport News, VA

30 Month Contract

Requirements:

  • Must be local
  • Onsite 5x per week
  • Willingness to work nights occasionally

Description: As a Network Performance Switch Technician, you will be responsible for the advanced installation, operation, and maintenance of switching, data communications, and peripheral equipment associated with the Mobile Switching Center (MSC). You will participate in multi-functional projects and work collaboratively with other skilled team members to positively impact our business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate installation, testing, and troubleshooting on voice and data network platforms and transmission facilities (dark and lit fiber services, Gigabit Ethernet Services, OCn, T3, T1, and DS0).
  • Maintain system applications using traffic and capacity monitoring tools to track errors and optimize network performance.
  • Monitor building automated systems (BAS) to maintain network equipment operation, including AC/DC power systems and HVAC systems.
  • Ensure a secure operating environment for vendor safety and network integrity.
  • Update daily logs with site-specific information to track and maintain network changes.
  • Compose reports for system documentation to maintain environmental compliance and safety standards.
  • Support stakeholder organizations in identifying and solving complex problems.
  • Identify processes for improvement, elimination, or automation.
  • Assist with the cell site build program and switch inventory management.

Physical Requirements:

  • Climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated areas
  • Lifting and carrying objects up to 40 pounds
  • Pushing, pulling, grasping, twisting/bending
  • Crawling, squatting, or kneeling in small spaces

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or two or more years of work experience
  • Three or more years of relevant work experience
  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Four-year degree (BA, BS, Engineering, Computer Science)
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule as needed
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision on multiple projects while meeting tight deadlines
  • Experience in wireless networks
  • Knowledge or certification in LAN/WAN switching and IP routing protocols (e.g., CCNA, CCNP, JNCIA, NRS)
  • Experience in automation/programming and scripting (e.g., Python, Ansible)
  • Knowledge in the use of electronic test equipment
  • Knowledge of transmission facilities (dark and lit fiber services, Gigabit Ethernet Services, OCn10G, OC48, T3, T1, DS0)
  • Training or experience in data communications, digital communications, Linux operating systems and applications, telecommunications, networking or router support, DC power rectification, and battery systems
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Experience working with Ericsson, Samsung, Ciena, or Nokia

Targeted Years of Experience: 5+ years

Responsibilities:

  • Inspect, analyze, and troubleshoot systems and equipment
  • Read repair manuals and liaise with other professionals
  • Run tests and interpret results to make effective recommendations
  • Write reports, safety regulations, and preventative maintenance plans
  • Repair or replace faulty equipment
  • Fabricate any required components

Must-Have Skills:

  • Ability to support capital projects (eNSE, Router Migrations, Bandwidth Upgrades)
  • Ability to perform software upgrades to routers and other equipment
  • Understand, monitor, and troubleshoot circuit issues
