Job Description

Our practice, ORAL SURGERY GROUP, based in New Brunswick, New Jersey, is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Oral Surgery Dental Discharge Assistant to join our team!

As a Surgical Dental Assistant (Discharge), focusing on discharging patients after surgery and ensuring a smooth transition of patients from our facility to their homes. This position requires a compassionate and detail-oriented individual who can provide exceptional post-op care and support to patients during the discharge process.

Responsibilities:

  • Discharge and Continue Care for Patients:
    • The discharge assistant will work closely with the surgical team to ensure that patients are prepared for discharge and equipped with the necessary information and resources for post-operative care
    • Serve as a liaison between in-patient care and follow-up care
    • Conduct thorough assessments of patients prior to discharge to ensure their readiness to leave the facility
    • Monitor patients for any signs of complications or adverse reactions to medications and intervene as necessary
    • Quickly responding in an emergency – understand all materials in crash cart and efficient in emergency protocol
    • Ensure that quality of care is maintained or surpassed
  • Patient Support and Education:
    • Collaborates with physicians, caregivers, patient, family, other departmental team members, to proactively develop and implement a safe and appropriate individualized plan based on the patient's medical history and surgical procedure
    • Provide post-operative care instructions to patients, including oral hygiene practices, medication administration, and dietary restrictions
    • Make sure that the patient and their family understand exactly what to do after discharge to prevent injury and encourage healing
    • Offer reassurance and empathy throughout their treatment process
  • Administrative Duties:
    • Schedule patient follow-up appointments and coordinate with other dental staff to ensure smooth patient flow
    • Assist with inventory management, order medication, and dental supplies, and maintain equipment
    • Maintain, manage, and be responsible for narcotic inventory, including logging narcotics in and out and following all safety precautions
    • Accurately keep and maintain biopsy log and send out biopsies to lab
    • When needed, call in prescriptions for patients after the procedure communicate with pharmacies, and answer any related questions
Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a dental assisting program is required
  • Valid X-Ray License is required
  • Previous experience as a dental assistant, particularly in oral surgery, is highly desirable
  • Discharge experience highly preferred
  • Knowledge of oral surgery procedures, instruments, and materials
  • Familiarity with infection control protocols and safety measures
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a compassionate and patient-centered approach
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in dental software and computer literacy
