Water Meter Reader

Job Summary

The Water Meter Reader is responsible for the accurate reading and recording of all water and reuse water meters. This position also performs minor repairs to meters and boxes, troubleshoots meter issues, and completes service orders efficiently and accurately.

Key Responsibilities

  • Read and record water and reuse water meters manually, using a hand-held meter reading device or drive-by meter reading unit.
  • Inspect meters to ensure functionality and accuracy.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance on meters and meter boxes.
  • Troubleshoot meter malfunctions and report findings.
  • Process service orders electronically using an iPad or other digital device.
  • Communicate effectively with customers regarding meter-related concerns.
  • Maintain accurate records of meter readings and service orders.
  • Work in a team environment while establishing effective working relationships with City officials, employees, vendors, and the public.
  • Follow all safety regulations and occupational hazard precautions.
  • Learn and navigate city geography, including street maps and meter locations.
  • Be available for on-call duties, including weekends, holidays, and night shifts as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in meter reading and minor repairs.
  • Understanding of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, both in person and in writing.
  • Basic mathematical skills for accurate meter reading and calculations.
  • Ability to use office equipment such as copy machines and multi-line telephone systems.
  • Proficiency in using computers and digital devices for data entry and processing service orders.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, multitask, and adapt to daily demands.
  • Ability to maintain a professional and positive attitude, even in stressful situations.
  • Ability to understand and follow both written and verbal instructions.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • One (1) year of fieldwork experience, preferably in meter reading.
  • A combination of relevant education, training, and experience may be considered in place of the stated requirements.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License.

Work Schedule & Conditions

  • Work may require exposure to outdoor elements, including extreme weather conditions.
  • Must be able to walk long distances and perform physical labor such as bending, lifting, and kneeling.
  • Availability for on-call shifts, weekends, holidays, and night work as needed.
