Summary

Responsible for the operation, maintenance, and renovation of all Lubbock County facilities infrastructure and grounds, having an emphasis in all metal and/or welding related tasks. Required to practice tool and equipment control; procure and maintain adequate stock of equipment and supplies; use and report serviceability problems with department equipment; and support all departmental shops when needed. Drives welding areas of responsibilities from performing pipe connections, parts repair, and metal construction, etc. Perform other duties as required.

Essential Duties

  • Complete maintenance work and preventative maintenance inspections on county facilities regularly; document and report findings or concerns into the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and to the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, and manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Through the use of Stick, inert metal gas (MIG), inert tungsten gas (TIG), and/or Oxygen/Acetylene gas, perform welding and cutting duties to include, but not limited to: welding of parts and/or repair of broken or cracked parts; replace and/or repair signs or sign posts through the use of cutting metal and welding together; construct and/or repair metal door frames, scaffolding, catwalks, pipe bracings, equipment trailers, etc.
  • Inspect County metalwork on a routine basis and report concerns to the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Maintain, repair and/or replace doors, floor tiles, ceiling tiles and grids, chair rails, cabinets, chairs, bookcases, broken windows, and ceramic tile.
  • Clean and maintain roof drain lines and gutters.
  • Inventory warehouse and storage areas to determine availability of supplies; order and pick up supplies needed to properly complete jobs. Install and/or move furniture, filing cabinets, and other supplies as needed.
  • Perform painting tasks to include preparation of various types of surfaces by scraping, sandpapering and cleaning, and applying paint, varnish, lacquer, shellac, or other finishes.
  • Troubleshoot, align, lubricate, and repair machinery and equipment.
  • Perform alterations to existing structures by installing or removing walls, partitions, and similar construction.
  • Advise Maintenance Supervisor on job or project status and operational problems.
  • Support and comply with the Safety Program to include all safety and health rules, regulations, and operating policies and procedures.
  • Operate vehicles including pickups and forklifts.
  • Prepare cost estimates for proposed projects and obtain quotes in compliance with County purchasing policies.
  • Train other technicians in the proper use of various construction, maintenance, and welding equipment.
  • Follow all applicable fiscal county policies concerning attendance; documentation of work; dress and personal appearance; hazard and alarms; confidentiality; licensing and regulation.
  • Possess high quality customer service skills to resolve customer problems in a courteous, professional, timely and accurate manner.
  • Respond to 24hr. emergency maintenance callbacks and provide after-hours overtime work as needed.
  • Respond to emergency situations as required, i.e., fire, medical, terrorist, injuries, bomb threats, breeches of security, and notifying security officers.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a welding certification (CW, CRWT, CWS, etc.). Must also be a high school graduate or its equivalent, attended a trade school, and/or worked toward an associate degree in a related field, plus at least three years of welding experience; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties listed above. Texas Driver’s License.

Supplemental Information

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of welding and sheet metal working techniques, general building construction, and general maintenance. Basic computer usage. Experience with and understanding of the safe operation of equipment and tools. Troubleshoot building or equipment breakdowns with available resources with little, to no supervision. Apply safety standards to prevent hazards. Organize and prioritize tasks to be assigned and completed. Understand and follow instructions. Identify numbers, order parts, and perform mathematical calculations. Communicate effectively and work well in a team environment.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit and stand; handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee must frequently bend, stoop, squat, climb stairs/ladders, lie down, and walk. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds and must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, ability to adjust focus, and ability to interpret color through sight. Employee will be required to work in confinement areas, office buildings, and warehouses with standard incandescent and florescent lighting, to handle and properly dispose of hazardous chemicals, and work in areas of loud noise. Must be able to tolerate and work in extreme cold and hot weather.
