DIRECTOR OF GOVERNMENT and POLITICAL AFFAIRS

NMA is currently conducting a search for a full-time Director of Government and Political Affairs position in the association’s headquarters office in Washington D.C. Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Government and Political Affairs, this role will be critical role in the development and implementation of Congressional and government affairs strategies advocating for NMA policy priorities.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for working with other members of the government affairs team to develop and implement Congressional lobbying strategies advancing NMA’s legislative and policy goals through direct outreach to Members of Congress and staff which includes:
  • Analyze the impacts of Congressional and regulatory actions on the mining industry,
  • Draft position documents,
  • Create supportive materials, developing statements, and letters,
  • Identify Congressional allies advancing the mining industry’s policies,
  • Manage and track legislation that affects the mining industry,
  • Draft memoranda on issues in Congress important to our members,
  • Coordinate and respond to member companies and industry allies
  • Develop, cultivate, and maintain positive and new bipartisan relationships with Members of Congress, staff, and key Congressional Committees by educating, advocating, and being responsive to those offices to advance NMA’s legislative priorities
  • Lead, build, manage, and collaborate with outside groups and coalitions to create a cohesive voice to shape consensus and garner a wider range of support for NMA’s legislative priorities
  • Assist in coordinating internal committees to formulate the association’s positions and policies on specific policy issues
  • Ensures that the government affairs team is informed in a timely and effective way about legislative, policy, regulatory, and political risks, and opportunities relevant to our membership
  • Actively suggests targets for political giving through NMA’s Political Action Committees
  • Attend the fundraisers of key political allies

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, an advanced degree (e.g., business, finance, or law) preferred
  • 5+ years of related work experience, preferably on Capitol Hill or administration
  • Strong understanding of the legislative process
  • Knowledge of political dynamics and its ability to impact legislative process and predict outcomes
  • Impeccable communication and negotiation skills
  • Previous experience working in a fast-paced environment, with demonstrated ability to meet deadlines while managing multiple projects and ever-changing priorities
  • Highly- organized and detail-oriented
  • Self-starter who takes initiative and can anticipate needs before they arise and resolve issues quickly
