Position Summary:  

The Dean of Instruction & Accountability is a key academic leadership position responsible for ensuring the academic quality, rigor, and alignment of instructional programs with institutional goals and standards. This role focuses on enhancing the effectiveness of teaching and learning through the development, implementation, and continuous assessment of curriculum, instructional practices, and student learning outcomes. The Dean will foster a culture of academic excellence and accountability, ensuring that both faculty and programs are held to high standards of performance, continuous improvement, and alignment with accreditation requirements. 

Key Responsibilities:  

Instructional Leadership:  

  • Provide visionary leadership for all instructional programs, working with faculty and department heads to ensure academic quality, relevance, and rigor. 
  • Promote evidence-based teaching practices, innovative pedagogies, and active learning strategies across all academic disciplines. 
  • Lead the development and review of the institution’s curriculum to ensure alignment with the institution’s mission, strategic goals, and student needs. 
  • Foster an environment of academic excellence, professional development, and scholarship for faculty. 
  • Advocate for the integration of technology and emerging pedagogical methods to enhance teaching and learning. 

 

Academic Accountability and Assessment:  

  • Develop, implement, and monitor systems for evaluating and assessing instructional effectiveness, student outcomes, and program quality. 
  • Oversee the development and implementation of institutional learning outcomes assessments at the course, program, and institutional levels. 
  • Work with faculty and academic departments to collect, analyze, and use data on student performance, retention, and graduation rates to drive continuous improvement. 
  • Ensure compliance with regional and specialized accreditation standards and lead efforts for the institution’s accreditation processes. 
  • Develop reports and maintain records of assessment activities to demonstrate accountability and ensure alignment with institutional goals. 

  

Faculty Development and Support:  

  • Lead faculty development initiatives focused on effective teaching, curriculum design, assessment strategies, and the integration of technology into the classroom. 
  • Encourage a culture of collaboration and professional growth among faculty, providing mentorship and support for new and experienced educators. 
  • Organize and lead workshops, seminars, and training programs on pedagogical innovations, academic integrity, and student engagement. 
  • Evaluate faculty performance through regular reviews, peer assessments, and student feedback, ensuring continuous growth and alignment with institutional teaching standards. 

 

Academic Policy Development and Implementation:  

  • Lead the development and implementation of academic policies that govern instructional practices, grading, curriculum design, and faculty responsibilities. 
  • Ensure that academic policies align with best practices in higher education and foster a positive learning environment for students. 
  • Advise and guide faculty and academic staff in the interpretation and application of academic policies, procedures, and standards. 

 

Strategic Planning and Institutional Collaboration:  

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the institution’s strategic plan, particularly as it relates to academic programs and student success. 
  • Collaborate with senior leadership, including the Provost, Vice Presidents, and other academic leaders, to implement institutional goals and initiatives. 
  • Work closely with departments and faculty to identify and address emerging educational trends, opportunities, and challenges. 
  • Serve as a liaison to institutional committees, including those focused on curriculum, academic planning, and institutional effectiveness. 

 

Budget and Resource Management:  

  • Manage the budget for instructional programs and faculty development, ensuring effective use of resources to support academic initiatives. 
  • Advocate for adequate funding for teaching and learning resources, including instructional technology, professional development, and faculty support services. 
  • Work with academic departments to allocate resources equitably based on instructional priorities and institutional needs. 

 

Student Success and Engagement:  

  • Collaborate with student services and other academic leadership to ensure a student-centered approach to teaching and learning. 
  • Advocate for initiatives that improve student engagement, retention, and success, particularly for underrepresented or at-risk student populations. 
  • Foster a positive learning environment where students are challenged and supported in achieving academic and personal success. 
  • Oversee academic advising initiatives and coordinate student feedback processes to ensure continuous improvement in the student learning experience. 

External Relations and Advocacy:  

  • Represent the institution’s academic programs and instructional excellence at local, regional, and national events, conferences, and workshops. 
  • Build and maintain relationships with accrediting bodies, professional associations, and other higher education institutions. 
  • Advocate for the institution’s academic interests and raise its profile in the broader educational community. 

 

Qualifications:  

Education:  

  • A master’s degree (PhD, EdD, or equivalent preferred) in Education, Educational Leadership and Administration, Instructional Design, or a related field. 
  • Proven experience in academic leadership and management, particularly in K-12 setting. 

 

Experience:  

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in academic leadership roles, such as Department Chair, Associate Dean, Assistant Principal, or similar positions. 
  • Demonstrated experience with curriculum development, assessment, and accreditation processes. 
  • A track record of improving instructional quality and student outcomes. 
  • Experience with academic technology, online learning, and blended/hybrid course formats is highly desirable.

  • Expertise in curriculum development, teaching methodologies, and instructional best practices. 
  • Strong knowledge of accreditation processes, academic assessment frameworks, response to intervention, multi-tiered systems of support.
